Be welcomed in the fifth issue of Tales of the Morbid Butchers! Thank you for accepting my interview request! How are your days going?
The Master Butcher – Thanks man…reallygood to be featured in yourzine…things are doingprettygoodoverhere.
A.P. – Hey there. No, thank you Szilárd for your interest and support. Everything is ok on this side of the planet.
Let’s introduce your band to the readers please! How did INSEPULTO form shape?
A.P. – INSEPULTO is The Master Butcher on vocals, U.X.H bass and A.P. guitar and drum programming. The band had it’s first incarnation back in the early 90’s with a different line up. Sadly, we could not materialize anything due to a set of circumstances. Although we remained friends for all these years, each of us started working in our own bands and projects. But in 2006 I contacted U.X.H and we started working on some music I had laying around since early 00’s. We decided to contact The Master Butcher to see if he was interested in being part of the band. He said yes immediately. Right after that we started working on material that would eventually become our promo tape and part of our debut album.
Which are your main inspirations from the beginning? Which bands influenced you mainly?
A.P. – Well, we are all fans of great music. We listen to all kinds of bands and genres, although we have our fave subgenres. U.X.H. likes a lot of classic and some recent Black Metal and Death Metal. The Master Butcher is a fan of Gore influenced and classic Death Metal. I like Thrash and Death Metal and Grindcore.
As for influences, we all share the same liking to such huge acts as AUTOPSY, POSSESSED, CHAKAL, VENOM, MASSACRE, BATHORY, BEHERIT, IMPETIGO, RIPPIKOULU, SADUS, SARCOFAGO and so on.
As for me personally, I think that my main influence comes from the British Scene. I dig bands such as BOLT THROWER, AZAGTHOTH, CARCASS, ELECTRO HIPPIES, NAPALM DEATH, DOOM, EXTREMENOISE TERROR, DEFECATION, SACRILEGE, BENEDICTION, UNSEEN TERROR and the list goes on.
Whose idea was the INSEPULTO name? What does INSEPULTO mean?
A.P. - The word INSEPULTO means “unburied”. The idea of the name was from one of the former members of the band. But since it was never used and left behind, I thought we could use it again when we got together again. So it stayed.
The logo is so sick! Who made it?
A.P. - Thank you. Yeah, we really like the logo. The first version was designed and drawn by U.X.H. He is an skilled artist and he runs a professional illustration service, Lingua Mortis Artwork. Check his amazing works on his Facebook and Instagram pages. The newer version of the logo was refreshed by Italian artist Roberto Toderico. We were lucky to have him also draw the cover artwork for our second album. You can also follow him and check his amazing stuff in social media accounts.
Your first release is „The Posthomous Trinity” demo, what came out in 2010. Was it came out only as a self-releasedpiece? How did the guys welcome this release?
A.P. – Yes, actually, we released “The Posthumous Trinity” as a promo demo for zines and labels only. It was never meant to be sold, since we only wanted to spread the word and put the band out there. It helped us a lot since it was well received around the world and we got some pretty good reviews from printed and web based zines.
After that demo, your first full-length came out, which is entitled „Morbid Spawn of Resurrection”. Wasiteasy to find a label for this stuff? How did the Polish Wydawnictwo Muzyczne Psycholabel comeintopicture?
The Master Butcher – Well…I had contact with Robert in that time so whenthe final versionswere done…I sentsome of thesongs to him and apparently he likedthemso muchthat he offeredusthedeal to releasethealbumwithhislabel…so thereyougot…firstshot and wegotthedeal…ha ha ha
There are several motives on the cover which refer to the mythology of the ancient times. Are youinterested in thehistoricalreligions? Which is your favourite historic age/topic?
A.P. – The artwork for our debut álbum was made by another great artist, Daniel Corcuera from Chile. We have always been interested in archaic and pagan beliefs, so the illustration fit perfectly the concept behind our debut album. We don’t have a favourite age or topic, but the ancient Mesopotamian, Sumerian and Egyptian mythologies have been a constant in our interests.
How does the song writing work in your band? Who is responsible for the lyrics?
The Master Butcher – Most of the lyrics are done by me…however…Alfonso and Gilberth sometimes contribute with some…each has its own style…for example…Alfono’s lyrics are more “phylosophical” to use a term…Gilbert is much more into satanic theory and concepts…while mine are more the average ugly dirty sick brutal stuff typical in death metal…but no matter who can come up with the lyrics for a song…we pay attention to the fact that it has to be related with the overall atmosphere the music transmits…
“Morbid Spawn of Resurrection” is so heavy material! It’s a real oldskullDeath Metal whatsmellslike a crypt. How could you describe this stuff?
A.P. – Thank you for your words. Well, I think your description fits perfectly. We formed the band so we could play music that we worship. A tribute to our influences, so to speak. And I think “MSOR” reflects that.
Then there was your full length “The Necrodex”, which was published by the Spanish Mememto Mori in 2015. Why did you change label?
A.P. – We had a one album deal with Robert and WydawnictwoMuzyczne Psycho. And although we were very satisfied with his work, we wanted to check other options. And when Raul from Memento Mori contacted us, we said yes on the spot. Memento Mori is such a great label and Raul has a great taste for music. He is a real Death Metal maniac and working with him has been great so far!
What is the difference between “The Necrodex” and “Morbid Spawn...” in your opinion? Did you developcomparing to the first release?
A.P. – Our debut album is a lot more primitive and to the point. No frills, full on death Metal attack. With “The Necrodex” we wanted to explore other sounds and specially, atmospheres. Our aim was to create a shroud of darkness whenever you listened to it as a whole. A haunting, yet powerful listening experience and I think we nailed it right in the head.
How did the audience and the press welcome this album?
The Master Butcher – Both albums were received pretty well…some people like more the first one…some others the second one…both are different but connected with the same link…TRADITIONAL DEATH METAL…the difference would be mostly the production…and a bit the music…as The Necrodex…is a bit more developed and varied compared to the Morbid Spawn of Resurrection.
What are the future plans of INSEPULTO? When will then extassault arrive?
A.P. – We already have a bunch of material that we’ve been developing. We need to sit down and decide where we are going with this release and how are we going to do it. It’s been almost two years, so we think a new release is due. All can say is that the new stuff has the INSEPULTO trademark style but this time, we have been dwelling into new and darker depths, both musically and lyrically.
What is the underground metal like Costa-Rica? Do promotersorganize a lot of shows? Howoften? Do youhaveany fanzines there?
The Master Butcher – I thinkit’sprettycool…youknow…likeeveryother place…withsomeserious and hardworkingpeople…someother a bunch of cheapposersbut in general I thinkit’slikeanywhereelse. It’s a scene with some sort of history by now…and that makes a difference compared with other, less developed scenes.
Could you recommend us some remarkable bands from your country?
The Master Butcher – My favorites are Corpse Garden who play a really killer form of death metal…RottenSouls and theirkind of symphonicblack…Morbid Funeral &Paganus Doctrina more intothestraightBlack Metal field…Suppressor in thrashisreallygood…PseudostratiffiedEpitheliumone of theclassicbandshere…Advent of Bedlamisreallywell done too…Sight of Emptiness…more melodicstuffbutreallywell done…besidesthose…there are more bandsbutnothingreallyremarkable in myopionion…
A.P. – I really can’t say if the bands I like are remarkable or not, since the termis too subjective to personal opinions. Besides the bands that The Master Butcher already mentioned, I would recommend the following: CHEMICIDE, CULTO NEGRO, ORDO CAPER, ALASTOR SE, AVERXU ATRIUM, INHUMAN, PAZUZU, HRII FHTAGN, NOSTOC and HEAVY CHAINS.
I can’t find any concert flyers with INSEPULTO logo on the net. Did you ever play?
The Master Butcher – I am reallylooking forward to playsomelive shows with Insepulto…but at thismoment…I don’tthinkit’spossibleunfortunately…
A.P. – So far, we have not played any gigs. This due to a series of circumstances surrounding our personal lives. Although we do have plans to bring our music to the stage eventually but we have to find the right session musicians and resolve some other matters first.
What will happen to us after we die? What do you think about it? Is there anything waiting for us on the outside?
A.P. – I can’t really tell. No one has come back from the dead to let us know yet. So when it comes out to these matters, I think each living being is free think what they want as long as they do no harm to any other living beings.
Do you like cemeteries? I think besides they are silent, they are also very suitablefor drinking! Haha!
A.P. – When I was really young, my friends and I used to go to this graveyard close to my house. We used to prank the caretaker from time to time. But it was over soon. I guess we decided to let the dead rest in peace. Hahaha
Do you like horror movies? What are yourfavourites? What do you think about the remakes of the classics?
A.P. – Good old horror movies. My dad is a die-hard Hammer Films fan. So I spent my early years watching films featuring Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi and all the masters. Eventually, I started watching all the gory stuff and the classic films by Deodato, Fulci, Argento, Hino et al. Some of those remakes have been pretty good Others deserve never to be seen again. So far some of my fave films ever are: Hellraiser I and II, Cannibal Holocaust, The Beyond, Alien Saga, The House by the Cemetery, Zombi, Coppola’s Dracula, Suspiria, Inferno, Night of the Living Dead and a bunch of cheap B terror films.
Do you know any Hungarian bands?
