Crypt-stench hails Steffen! I welcome you
in the hands of Morbid Butchers. Don't worry, our blades are not that sharp,
hehehe.
Hello Zoltán - glad to hear your blades
are not sharp. Will make the wounds extra purulent!
First, let me congratulate on your
”Brain Eater” album. I haven't heard such a dirty, corpse-stench death metal
from a Eropean band for a long time. It is very good background music for an
orgy held in a crypt. Have you ever participated in group sex in a crypt?
Thanks for the nice words about our
album. To be honest, I first thought your e-mail is an invitation to a
perverted orgy but unfortunately it's only a investigative penetration of my
mind.
Are you listening to music while
answering these questions?
Yes, I'm currently spinning the 12"
EP of EXPULSION. First song was very good. Let's see how the others sound!
Please tell us in a few sentences how
this sick horde was born. Have you played in other bands before?
Butzke and me started this band back in
2013. It all started with some “Hey Butzke, play a simple death metal”-riffs.
This jam became a song and after short time we had some songs ready for a
recording session. The “Morbid Rite” demo. Our first physical offering. Besides
writing songs we asked Micha to join the band. The scene in Wolfsburg is quite
small. So we knew each other since years. Butzke changed the instrument to bass
– that’s it.
Micha played in a black metal band called
PURGAMENTUM. But they split up. And Butzke plays in ARCANE FROST. I played in
DISSOULED and joined OPHIS. A new project of mine is REPULSIVE FEAST. More info
about that soooon...
Both ”Wormhead” EP and ”Brain Eater”
were out on Xtreem Music. How did this cooperation come about? By the way, they
also have two Hungarian bands in their roster called Gravecrusher and Gutted.
Are you familiar with those?
Dave of Xtreem Music noticed our band
because of one of our split releases. When we recorded our “Wormhead”-EP and
were looking for a label to release it, we had some contact. So it was this
“being at the right place at the right time”-thing.
I know those two bands. Owning releases
of both of these bands. Hope the collection is complete.
Your lyrics are truly appetizing, hehe.
Do you write them collectively? Are you big horror fans? What do you think of
horror remakes?
It's mostly Butzke and me writing the
lyrics. But we're working seperate on them. We're fans of horror books, movies
and what ever else. Brings great inspiration!
Some remakes are good. For example
"Dawn Of The Dead". Or I like the fakt the blood in the remake of
evil dead was fake blood and not CGI-bullshit. But there're also a lot of bad
remakes.
Have any of you already worked in a
place where you need to deal with dead? I tell you that I've been working in
the pathology department of a hospital since 21 years as an autopsy assistant.
Dealed with death, yes. But not at work.
Is your work inspiring you?
You have played in Budapest in 2017 and
to my grief I was not able to attend that gig. What memories do you have of
that show? Did you only play the gig or did you also see the city? Have you
been to Hungary before?
None of us has been to Hungary before. So
we were excited about coming to Budapest. It's a beautiful city. We haven't
seen much of it but a bit. I remember the place we played (DRRPNC) very well.
And the beer was very tasty. And our host was very kind to us. Looking forward
to meet him again when he's coming to Germany with his band CRIPPLED FOX in
May.
I really like your covers. Who drew
these?
Demo: A friend of mine
Split with GRAVEYARD GHOUL: Mark Riddick
"Wormhead": Necromaniac
Artworks
Split with RESTOS HUMANOS: A guy from
South America
"Brain Eater": Ravager Artworks
Split with MINENFELD: Skaðvaldur
You did a Japanese tour last year, what
experiences do you have of that? Are Japanese fans that fanatical? Did you like
Japanese food? Haven't the Japanese cuisine tortured your stomach?
Wow... where shall I begin? It was an awesome
experience. The people over there are extremely friendly. Food wasn't that
shock we awaited. Was tasty! And the culture of eating is different from our
European. But we liked it very much.
The concerts were crazy. The people act a
bit different from what we know in Europe.
Your Suffocation cover is just
phenomenal! It is really sick and you made a great Cryptic Brood track out of
it. Was this intentional or it just turned out like that? Do you have other
covers maybe under your belt?
I can't exactly remember how the idea to
play that SUFFOCATION song that way came up. But for us it was import that if
we cover a song of another band, then we'll transform the song into our style.
We recorded another cover for our split with MINENFELD. It's the song
"Kauf oder stirb" by the German punk band SLIME.
If you would be asked to describe the
music of Cryptic Brood with a movie title, what would you say?
“The Thing”. Doesn’t matter if the old or
new one. And to come back to your question about old and new horror movies: In
this case both are good.
If I invite a girl for lunch to my
house, and as background music, I use Cryptic Brood, what should I cook in your
opinion? Hehe.
Simple: Brains!
I would have to decide... a farm in
Belgium or a transport container in a parking deck.
I obtained all your materials except
for the ”Morbid Rite” demo. Is there a CD reissue or vinyl planned maybe?
Currently no re-release of our demo is
planned.
Your music is quite sick and extreme,
have you ever met a morbid or insane fan? Maybe you got some body parts and
organs as present? Hehe.
Unfortunately not. Send me your liver. I
need a new one!
Did you always want to be a trio? I
think it is just perfect.
Yes. We like it. We're not playing a
second guitar on our records. It's the way we want to sound.
I saw in your live videos that you have
been attacking your equipment intensely. Isn't it too tiring to do also vocals?
I do not think you have problems with your body weight.
Hey... we play death metal. How can you
play that softly?
What about alcohol? As Germans, I think
that beer is basic for you. Do you have other fave drinks beside that? Do you
know Hungarian beers or drinks?
Micha is into Whisky. I like some herbal
liqueurs like Chartreuse or Becherovka. But favourite is and will be beer!!!
What kind of beer would you recommend
for a Cryptic Brood listening session?
Just some standard German Pils.
If you had your own beer brand, what
would be its name? How would the label for that look like?
My beer would be called "Cryptic
Brewed" and the label would have some beer drinking zombies on it.
This crypt-stench, pure death metal is
getting popular these years. What are your favourite bands in this genre?
There're many bands I like. But it
changes from time to time what I prefer to listen to. This list would change
often so it's hard for me to write it down (because I know it would change
soon).
What other music beside metal you are
listening to?
One of us is sometimes listening to
(German) Hip Hop, one is into electronic music.
Do you have any hobbies or sport
interest maybe?
My music-related stuff is very time
consuming: being active in three bands, booking and setting up shows, label and
distro... but besides that I'm into table top games, card games and this stuff.
And I'm killing a lot of kilometers with my bycicle.
Would you tell us about your other band
Ophis? As far as I know you are quite new in it.
Yes, I joined this Death Doom band in
October 2016. Played drums for the recording of their fourth album "The
Dismal Circle". The band was founded back in 2001. They're great guys.
Do you like fanzines?
The printed ones. Yes!!!
If you'd be asked to compose a march, what
would that be? Military march, football march, dead march?
A rotten march of the undead!
Do you like to search and check for new
bands?
Yes. And collecting physical releases.
It's a never ending hunt!!!
Why do you think death metal is still
popular since almost 3 decades?
Because it's intense music full of
energy. It doesn't get boring. And the scene is active. That keeps it alive.
Thank you so much for the answers. I
hope you'll visit Hungary again! A message to the readers?
Thank you so much for this interview!
Would love to come back to Hungary. Hope that will happen soon. Uargh!
